UNIDOS POR LA PAZ Y HERMANDAD – UNITED FOR PEACE AND BROTHERHOOD

El pasado 24 y 25 de noviembre de 2023, miembros, amigos y familiares de la comunidad judía reformista de Puerto Rico se unieron en un evento histórico: tres rabinos fueron homenajeados y honrados por su trayectoria y labor.
Como todos los viernes en la noche, la congregación se presentó en el Templo para recibir el Shabbat, marcado así con el encendido de las velas. Entre rezos y plegarias de agradecimiento a Dios por la vida, por la existencia y por el momento que vivimos, esta comunidad dio paso a un encuentro singular. Una nueva ceremonia marcaba el momento de nombrar como Eméritos a aquellos Rabinos que por los pasados años fueron los pilares de la comunidad. Una comunidad que se fue transformado con el paso de los años de una anglosajona a una hispana.
Los rabinos Norman Patz, rabino emérito de Temple Sholom en West Essex en Nueva Jersey y el rabino Roberto Graetz de Argentina, rabino emérito del Templo Isaiah en Lafayette, California recibieron con gran alegría y humildad este reconocimiento, ahora en el Templo Beth Shalom de San Juan. La noche incluyó un mensaje sorpresa del Congresista Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), la Sra. Sue Klau, fundadora de la comunidad, y de las Sras. Naomi Patz y Evelyn Graetz quienes compartieron hermosas historias de sus respectivos esposos.
La mañana siguiente, la comunidad se disponía a continuar celebrando el Shabbat mientras con ansias esperaban oficializar a su nuevo y permanente rabino. Por más de 20 años, esta pequeña comunidad ubicada en Santurce, no había tenido un rabino permanente y más importante aún, que fuese trilingüe.
Enmarcados por un público mixto entre miembros y amigos de otras comunidades religiosas, el evento cúspide dio comienzo. Fue un encuentro armonioso en el que se pudo dar continuidad a una linda convivencia que se marcó el pasado 19 de noviembre de 2023 en el Servicio Interreligioso de Acción de Gracias liderado por el pastor Marc Miller de la Union Church de San Juan. En esta ocasión, el Pastor Miller y la hermana Sumayah Soler de la Sociedad Islámica de Puerto Rico también se unieron para compartir este importante momento para el rabino Hernán Rustein y reforzar la importancia de mantenernos unidos y en hermandad. Debemos crear puentes que nos unan y lleven a la paz.
Durante la ceremonia, también compartieron mensajes y palabras de sabiduría, el Sr. Edward Finkel de la Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA, por sus siglas en inglés), la Sra. Angélica Tobón Rendón, esposa del rabino Rustein y familiares y amigos desde Argentina. Un memorable momento se dio cuando los rabinos eméritos, impartieron su bendición sobre el rabino Rustein y le brindaron palabras de sabiduría. Finalmente, los rabinos eméritos, el Presidente de la comunidad Emmanuel Rodríguez, el joven Dariel González y la congregación sellaron su compromiso por el nuevo caminar de la comunidad que allí albergaba. Ambos eventos fueron amenizados musicalmente por Ángel Rojas, Angela Ortega y Emily Krasinski. Sin duda alguna, esta comunidad se elevó a otro nivel de compromiso, unión, entrega y acción social. El rabino Hernan Rustein nació en Buenos Aires, Argentina donde obtuvo también su ordenación rabínica. Por los pasados diez años se desempeñó en diferentes roles en Templo Libertad, la primera emblemática congregación histórica de Argentina, siendo rabino su último rol. En el 2014, fue invitado a cantar en el Vaticano frente el Papa Francisco. Es un fervoroso mediador y promovedor de la paz y unión. Además, su enfoque sobre los matrimonios interculturales le ha permitido escribir sobre el tema y ritualizar estás uniones, a lo largo de la región latinoamericana.
Continuando los lazos de paz y hermandad, el rabino Rustein y la hermana Sumayah Soler estarán compartiendo con los estudiantes de la UPR de Mayagüez el próximo 12 de diciembre en celebración a la fiesta de Janucá. Será un evento para continuar elevando esos puentes de paz y llevar luz en medio de la oscuridad.

On November 24th and 25th, 2023, members, friends and family of the Reform Jewish community of Puerto Rico came together in a historic event: three rabbis were honored for their career and work.
Like every Friday night, the congregation appeared at the Temple to receive the Shabbat, marked with the lighting of the candles. Between prayers and prayers
of gratitude to God for life, for existence and for the moment we live in, this community gave way to a unique encounter. A new ceremony marked the moment of naming as Emeritus those Rabbis who for the past years were the pillars of the community. A community that was transformed over the years from an Anglo-Saxon to a Hispanic one.
Rabbi Norman Patz, Rabbi Emeritus of Temple Sholom in West Essex in New Jersey, and Rabbi Roberto Graetz of Argentina, Rabbi Emeritus of Temple Isaiah in Lafayette, California, received this recognition with great joy and humility, now at Temple Beth Shalom in San Juan. The evening included a surprise message from Congressman Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), Sue Klau, founder of the community, Naomi Patz and Evelyn Graetz who shared beautiful stories of their respective husbands.
The next morning, the community prepared to continue celebrating Shabbat while they eagerly waited to make their new and permanent rabbi official. For more than 20 years, this small community located in Santurce had not had a permanent and, more importantly, trilingual rabbi.
Framed by a mixed audience of members and friends of other religious communities, the summit event began. It was a harmonious meeting in which it was possible to continue a beautiful coexistence that was marked last November 19, 2023 in the Interreligious Thanksgiving Service led by Pastor Marc Miller of the Union Church of San Juan. On this occasion, Pastor Miller and Sister Sumayah Soler from the Islamic Society of Puerto Rico also joined together to share this important moment for Rabbi Hernán Rustein and reinforce the importance of staying united and in brotherhood. We must create bridges that unite us and lead to peace.
During the ceremony, messages and words of wisdom were also shared by Mr. Edward Finkel of the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), Ms. Angélica Tobón Rendón, wife of Rabbi Rustein, and family and friends from Argentina. A memorable moment occurred when the Emeritus Rabbis imparted their blessing on Rabbi Rustein and offered him words of wisdom. Finally, the Rabbis, President of the community Emmanuel Rodríguez, the youth representative Dariel González and the congregation sealed their commitment to the new path of the community that was housed there. Both events were musically enlivened by Ángel Rojas, Angela Ortega and Emily Krasinski. Without a doubt, this community rose to another level of commitment, union, dedication and social action. Rabbi Hernan Rustein was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina where he also obtained rabbinical ordination. For the past ten years he served in different roles at Templo Libertad, Argentina’s first emblematic historic congregation, his last role being rabbi. In 2014, he was invited to sing at the Vatican in front of Pope Francis. He is a fervent mediator and promoter of peace and union. Furthermore, his focus on intercultural marriages has allowed him to write on the subject and ritualize these unions, throughout the Latin American region.
Continuing the ties of peace and brotherhood, Rabbi Rustein and Sister Sumayah Soler will be sharing with the students of the UPR of Mayagüez on December 12th in celebration of the holiday of Hanukkah. It will be an event to continue raising those bridges of peace and bringing light in the midst of darkness.
